DV attends Clay Target League State Championships

    The Dakota Valley trap team was in Aberdeen for the Clay Target League State Championships on June 6-8, 2025. Panther competitors included: Colby Mullin, Sam Chartier, Claire Wiebelhaus, Garrett Wiebelhaus, Andrew Derochie, A.J. Cheever and Grayson Duhaime.

    Panthers split double header against Rolling Hills

    The Panther legion baseball squad played a double header versus Rolling Hills Supply Post 43 Seniors of Wayne on Sunday, June 15, 2025. After 2 close contests the teams would split with each taking 1 win and 1 loss.

    Board discusses library policies

    The Elk Point-Jefferson Board of Education held its regular meeting on June 9, 2025, at 5:30 PM in the high school study hall. Vice President Sayler presided over the meeting, with board members Brewer, Hanson, and Jacobs in attendance. Board member Geary was absent, and Superintendent Dr. Schonebaum was present.

    Schonebaum President Elect for the SDCA

    Leadership for the South Dakota Counseling Association announced, in June, that Elk Point-Jefferson’s very own Danielle Schonebaum has been named President Elect for the South Dakota Counseling Association (SDCA).

    Union County considers jail security upgrades

    The Union County Board of Commissioners held its regular session on June 10, 2025, at 8:30 AM in the Courthouse in Elk Point, South Dakota. Commissioners Dailey, Joffer, Ballard, Kimmel, and Ustad were present. The meeting began with the approval of the agenda and the minutes from the May 27 session before moving into a review of the county’s financial reports. The county treasurer’s records showed a total balance of $20,023,998.55, including deposits, investments, and funds administered for city, school, and township revenue accounts. Monthly reports from various departments were presented, with the Sheriff’s Office collecting $15,793.85 in federal prisoner and INS room and board fees, the Register of Deeds recording $19,298.50 in transfer taxes, and the Clerk of Courts generating $27,842.77 in revenue. The Veteran Service Office reported 28 contacts for the month, while Nurse Donations totaled $50 in May following no recorded donations in April.

    EPJ performs well at State Trap Championship

    Despite wind gusts at 20-30 miles per hour, the Elk Point-Jefferson trap team performed well at the 2025 Trap Shooting State Championships with the South Dakota State High School Clay Target League. The event took place at the Aberdeen Gun Club on June 6-8, 2025.

    Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales murder trial begins

    With jury selection on June 12-13, 2025, Elk Point’s courtroom for the state’s case versus Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales in the murder of Jordan Beardshear was at full capacity. On Monday, June 16, 2025 lawyers appeared more than ready to address the jury in opening statements. As the morning progressed, state prosecutors began calling their witnesses to the stand in what is expected to be a multi-day trial that could go into next week or potentially July.

    Immanuel Lutheran Church holds VBS True North

    Immanuel Lutheran Church welcomed young adventurers to its annual Vacation Bible School from June 3-6, transforming the experience into a lively, outdoor-themed journey titled True North. With 28 enthusiastic children ages 4-11 participating, the event was filled with faith, fun, and discovery.

    EPJ Legion baseball team wins two drops one

    Three close contests were played by Elk Point-Jefferson’s senior legion baseball team on June 14 and June 15, 2025. The outcome was 2 wins and 1 loss. The first battle came versus Vermillion on Saturday, June 14th and resulted in a 1-0 victory.
