Elk Point firefighters work to extinguish a grass fire in a field along SD Highway 11 just outside Elk Point on April 20, 2026. Police and ambulance crews also responded as winds pushed flames through the dry vegetation.

Huskies in Cassandra Schmith’s Structured Learning Center (SLC) classroom took a field trip to the Elk Point police station on Wednesday, April 15, 2026. The goal for the trip was to deliver communication cards, made by the Elk PointJefferson (EPJ) students, to the Chief of Police and his officers.
Absentee ballots delayed for June 2 primary in Union County

Absentee ballots for South Dakota’s June 2 primary election will not be available on the first day of the absentee voting period, the Union County Auditor’s Office announced this week.
Dakota Valley sets school record at SC Relays

After a couple of canceled track meets the Panthers were finally able to compete on Saturday, April 11, 2026 at the Sioux City (SC) Relays. The annual meet celebrated its 61st anniversary this year and brought talent that ranged from high schoolers to college athletes from Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota.
EPJ sets records at Sioux City Relays

A lot of medals in gold, silver and bronze were accrued by Elk Point-Jefferson (EPJ) as student athletes competed in track and field at the 61st Annual Sioux City (SC) Relays. The event was held at Elwood Olsen Stadium and spans two days with middle school, high school and college programs all in attendance. The varsity Husky events happened on Saturday, April 11, 2026 in cold, but tolerable temperatures.

Panthers surge past Canton with 12‑run outing

Twelve runs and 8 hits by the Dakota Valley (DV) baseball team was more than enough to get it done in the win over Canton on Thursday, May 7, 2026. Panther senior Noah Graham was fierce on the mound as he allowed only 3 hits and 1 earned run. Graham sat down 9 batters with strikeouts.

Council backs replat

The Elk Point City Council moved through a light agenda May 4, ap‑proving a survey replat and renewing a slate of malt beverage licenses for the coming year. Mayor Deb McCreary led the meeting, with council members Brian Abraham, Renee Irwin, Ben Irlbeck, Meghan Aus‑tad and Kris Hurlbert present.

Panthers post strong showing at back‑to‑back invites

The Panther girls golf team continued their stellar play as they took runner-up at the Vermillion Invite on May 4, 2026. Addicyn Sailer was a medalist for Dakota Valley (DV). She shot a personal best of 71 which was -1 under par.

Huskies split busy stretch with sweep of Tri‑County

Elk Point-Jefferson played a lot of baseball to end April and start the month of May. A doubleheader versus the Tri-County Sundogs happened on April 30, 2026. The match-up resulted in a pair of Husky wins. Tough games versus Scotland/Menno and Canton on May 2, 2026 had Elk Point-Jefferson (EPJ) on the losing side. More fierce play continued on Monday, May 4, 2026 against Beresford.
