The Dakota Valley School District Board of Education met in regular session on Monday, Sept. 8, addressing a full agenda that included staffing transitions, policy revisions, surplus declarations, and union negotiations. The meeting was held at 6 p.m. in the district board room and was called to order by Vice-Chairperson Matt Thompson. Board members Jessica Hanson, Andrew Nilges, and Emily Norby were present; member Steve Kistner was absent. Superintendent Garrett Schmidt and Business Manager Jill Sponder were also in attendance.

On Monday, the Huskies traveled to Vermillion to compete at The Bluffs for the first of many events scheduled at the course this season. Conditions were warmer than Friday’s round in Mitchell, but the wind played a major role throughout the day.

The heat and the hills did not stop the Huskies from pushing themselves hard on September 9, 2025 at Canton’s cross country meet. Navigating a tough run on the Hiawatha Golf Course, Elk Point-Jefferson looked strong. Multiple medalists came home as EPJ ran hard at the meet to set many personal records (PR).

The volleyball court was a popular place for Husky fans as Elk Point-Jefferson had a double dose of matches throughout the 2nd week of September. The Huskies battled the Trojans of West Central on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Two days later they were working hard again in a match versus Canton.

Excitement could be felt as the Huskies traveled to Winner to take on the Warriors, in football, on Friday, September 12, 2025. Both squads are fierce and close contests often ensue whenever they are competing under the Friday Night Lights. This time, Elk Point-Jefferson was the big winner as they defeated the Winner Warriors 20-8.

The scoreboard could barely keep with the Dakota Valley varsity football team on Friday, September 12, 2025. Multiple touchdowns and strong plays were observed as the Panther defense completely shut down their opponent’s attempt to move the football. Fifty-eight points were put up in the 1st half by DV to have this game end after just 2 quarters of play. It was a final of 58-0 in favor of the Panthers.

The Elk Point City Council met in regular session Monday, Sept. 8, addressing a full agenda that included the swearing-in of a new council member, approval of the city’s 2026 appropriations ordinance, and discussion of infrastructure and development issues affecting local residents.

The hills were alive as the Panther cross country squad ran hard through elevated terrain at the team’s meet, in Canton, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Warm weather was present, but strong times still prevailed across the board for varsity, junior varsity and middle school.

The Jefferson City Council met in regular session Monday, Sept. 8, approving the city’s 2026 budget ordinance, reviewing ongoing nuisance abatement efforts, and considering community requests related to Oktoberfest and future grant funding. The meeting was held at City Hall with Mayor Paddy Rigg presiding; all council members, Tony Boulware, Jason Casper, Mark LaFleur, John Lokhorst, and Michael Stokely, were present. Also attending were City Attorney Kaleigh Koch, Finance Officer Michaeleen Roark, and Police Chief Dustin Sharkey.
