Internship turns into job security

Internships are meant to help people determine whether they enjoy a job or not. For one Elk Point-Jefferson senior, his internship led to a job opportunity.

County holds first meeting of 2023

The first Union County Board of County Commissioners meeting of 2023 was rescheduled from Tuesday, Jan. 3 to Thursday, Jan. 5 due to poor weather conditions. During the rescheduled meeting, the commissioners determined various appointments to the county, including chairman and vice-chairman.

Elk Point- Jefferson band receives multiple awards while in Florida

The Elk Point-Jefferson Marching Band returned from Tampa, FL on Jan. 3 after a successful ReliaQuest Bowl appearance. The band brought home more than just memories – they brought back four awards: Best Drum Major (Aubrey Bousquet), Best Marching, Best Overall Effect and #1 Parade Band in their classification Before leaving for Florida, the band spent around 10 hours practicing the music for the halftime performance. While in Florida, all the bands (others from San Diego, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio) were able to have almost five hours of combined rehearsal time at Thomas Jefferson High School. Altogether, the band members totalled over 600 students.

Girls split back-to-back games

The Dakota Valley girls basketball team had two tough home games to start 2023. They took on Viborg-Hurley Friday, Jan 6 and the Warriors of Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Saturday, Jan 7. The Panthers would split and garner a loss and win to start the new year.

City holds first meeting of 2023

The North Sioux City City Council met for their first meeting of the year, Jan. 3. During this meeting, the council designated the Dakota Dunes/North Sioux City Times as the official newspaper of North Sioux City. They also moved some future meeting dates due to Sunday or Monday holidays – Jan. 16 to Jan. 17, Feb. 20 to Feb. 21, June 19 to June 20 and Sept. 4 to Sept. 5.

Student council kicks off second semester

To kick off the second semester, Dakota Valley high school and middle school students assembled in the basketball gyms for welcome back pep rallies this past week. High school students attended their pep rally on Monday, Jan. 9 and middle schoolers went to theirs on Friday, Jan. 6. Both pep rallies were put on by student council members who coordinated a variety of games for students and staff.

Holiday camps during winter break entertain many local youth

Winter break means many children are out of school and apt to spend their days indoors as cold weather makes playing outside unlikely. However, for many youngsters in the area there were numerous camps happening to keep all involved busy and engaged.
