Schonebaum elected to Beadle Club

Superintendent Philip Schonebaum was elected as a South Dakota Beadle Club member at 10:30 am on February 5 in Pierre, South Dakota. The purpose of the Beadle Club is to signally honor selected individuals in South Dakota who have given meritorious service in the cause of education over the years. This service must be aside from and in addition to their regular contributions made in their official capacities.
Quiz bowl brings home top finish

The Dakota Valley quiz bowl team is in the heart of their season and performing well. Recently on Monday, January 27, 2025, they brought home a top finish from Dell Rapids.
EPJ at Region 1A One-Act Play Festival

Elk Point-Jefferson’s cast and crew, for the 2024-25 One-Act season, were up early on January 28, 2025 for the Region 1A One-Act Play Festival. The event took place at Vermillion High School and the Huskies were first to take the stage. They performed the comedy Bobby Wilson Can Eat His Own Face by Don Zolidis.
Horizon Build Dakota Scholarships now open

Applications are open for the 2025-2026 academic year for scholarships Horizon Health made available through a partnership with the Build Dakota Scholarship Program. Full-ride scholarships are provided to successful candidates by the Build Dakota Scholarship Program.
Rockin' STEM night at Dakota Valley

The Panther elementary school building was rockin’ on Thursday, January 30, 2025 in the most literal sense. It was STEM night and this year’s theme revolved around gems, rocks, minerals and stones. The acronym STEM stands for: science, technology, engineering and mathematics. And from 5 pm to 7 pm, Dakota Valley families were encouraged to stop by the elementary school and have fun with STEM learning in regards to minerals, gemstones, paleontology and more.

Jefferson approves trash contract

The Jefferson City Council on Aug. 4 approved a new three-year trash contract, scheduled upcoming budget discussions, and addressed several community concerns during its regular meeting at City Hall.

Attempted robbery in Elk Point

A northwest Iowa man is facing multiple charges after a reported break-in attempt in Elk Point. According to records, James Jennings, 43, tried to force entry into a home on Aug. 3, threatened two residents and attempted to climb through a kitchen window while armed with a knife. Jennings was injured during the incident and now faces two counts of aggravated assault and one count of first-degree…

2025 Fall coaches at EPJ

It is still summer, but the Elk Point-Jefferson school district has been busy gearing up for autumn activities in 2025. A fall sports kickoff meeting occurred on July 23, 2025 and practices are almost ready to start, or have commenced, for the Huskies. Many familiar faces are back in the roles of fall coaches for EPJ. Justin Clercx continues in his role as activities director for the Huskies.

Union County Fair celebrates 95th year

The county fairgrounds in Alcester, SD were a busy place from Thursday, July 31st through Saturday, August 2nd, as the Union County Fair took place for 2025. Fun was had with 4-H participants showcasing their skills and talents while the general public flocked to the fairgrounds to enjoy vendors, see exhibits and take part in many entertainment offerings.

DV Senior Legion team shows grit at state

Milbank, South Dakota was the destination for Dakota Valley’s Senior Legion baseball team as they made their way there for the state tournament on August 1-5, 2025. Strong regional play combined with an overall 17-6 record had strong energy following the team from North Sioux City.

DV Sideline Cheer

It will be football season soon and sideline cheer tryouts have already taken place for Dakota Valley as everyone gears up for Friday Night Lights in 2025. Thirteen student athletes were selected to be a part of the Panther sideline cheer squad for football. A mixture of upperclassmen seniors and juniors in addition to some sophomores make up the team.

EPJ rebounds with 13-1 win after tough doubleheader

Elk Point-Jefferson’s junior legion baseball team had a trio of games to end the month of July. On July 28, 2025 the Huskies faced two tough ball clubs in Dakota Valley (DV) and Beresford. The next day, they were up against Canton and secured a big victory 13-1.
