Elk Point-Jefferson Lady Huskies bring home sixth place

The Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies travelled to Aberdeen to take part in the firstever state sanctioned Class A softball tournament June 1-3. Class AA and Class B also held their tournaments in Aberdeen.

Seniors named to AcademicAll-State teams

Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies who were named to the Class B Region 1 Academic All-State team were Ben Swatek, Evan Hailey, Hunter Geary, Jackson Prouty, Levi Miller and Ty Trometer. These seniors were named to the team because they met the requirements of having a GPA of 3.5 or above.

Huskies receive recognition

The South Dakota Softball Coaches Association Academic All-State team includes seniors who were nominated by their coach and have a GPA of 3.5 or above. In Class A, Elk Point-Jefferson’s seniors to receive this recognition were Sophia Giorgio, Grace Griffin, Alyssa Chytka, Josie Curry, Grace Schuh, Jezmarie Stultz-Praster, Danica Torrez and Nicole Wells.

Accident on US Highway 48

The Union County Sheriff’s Office responded to an accident on South Dakota Highway 48 near mile marker 383 on Monday, May 29 at 9:44 a.m. Along with the sheriff’s office being dispatched to the scene, the Akron Fire and Rescue, South Dakota Highway Patrol and Mercy Air were also present.

Pink in the Park

The Elk Point Pink Ladies held their 2nd Annual Pink in the Park Saturday, June 3. Children were able to play various games, jump on bouncy houses, play with bubbles and get their face painted. Adults had the opportunit y to browse the vendor fair and get treats from food trucks.

The Siouxland Humane Society is thrilled to announce its highly anticipated virtual auction event, set to take place from June 8 to June 19, 2023. With the mission of improving the lives of our beloved four-legged companions, the Wizard of Paws Virtual Auction will raise vital funds to support animal welfare in our community.

LifeServe blood center May donations

For over 15 years, Elk Point and surrounding communities have supported the local blood bank, LifeServe Blood Center, with at least six blood donation opportunities per year. Over the course of May, one blood drive was hosted to support the 150-plus local hospitals that LifeServe Blood Center serves. From this drive, 21 units of blood were collected which has the ability to save up to 63 local lives.

County voids vote

A motion made at a March 7 meeting was voided after a discussion and an executive session at the Union County Board of County Commission meeting May 30. On March 7, the strip of land along the railroad north of the fairground property was the topic of conversation for the commissioners.
