County approves budget

Union County Commissioners approved new hires, infrastructure agreements, and a provisional 2026 budget during their Aug. 19 regular meeting, while reviewing more than $17.4 million in managed funds and authorizing over $500,000 in claims.

New EPJ board member sworn in

The Elk Point-Jefferson Board of Education approved a $304,431 payment to Huff Construction, finalized its 2025–26 salary listings, and enacted several policy updates during its regular meeting and budget hearing held Aug. 11. The board also welcomed a new member and approved multiple personnel changes as the district prepares for the upcoming school year.

Panther Pride on display at DV open house

The Dakota Valley school district hosted their open house on Thursday, August 14, 2025. The middle school and high school were open for students and families to visit, meet teachers, find classrooms and allow students to practice their locker combinations.

DDCID advances levee repair

Only board members Janet Finzen and Bill Shorma were absent for the regular meeting of the Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District (CID) on July 21, 2025. Ken Beaulieu, Scott Wetz, Julie Shanafelt were present along with CID attorney Darrell Jesse, CID Manager Andrew Tramp, Finance Officer Katelyn Irby and resident Larry Wiese.

Buffalo chips, pie and pioneer spirit at Adams

In honor of the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve becoming a state park in South Dakota, a celebration was held on Saturday, August 9, 2025. Visitors flocked to the landmark to step back in time and enjoy the historical atmosphere. This has become an annual event and marked the 28th year for Adams being a state park.

The Union County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 5 approved a series of infrastructure agreements, personnel changes, and financial claims during a full-day meeting at the courthouse.

NSC OKs flood recovery loan

The North Sioux City Commission on Aug. 4 reviewed updates on flood recovery efforts, approved multiple plats and financial measures, and entered executive session to discuss contractual matters. Mayor Chris Bogenrief called the meeting to order at 6 p.m. Commissioners Julie Burhoop, Lynn Hoffman, Jessica Strain and Vincent Tucker were present. City Administrator Jeff Dooley, Finance Officer Amy Lilly and City Attorney Sarah Kleber also attended.

Novacek speaks to Panther crowd

The Dakota Valley annual fall sports meeting was held on Monday, August 4, 2025 in the high school gym. A special guest speaker was on-hand as parents and student athletes got to hear from former NFL Dallas Cowboy Jay Novacek.

Union County Fair celebrates 95th year

The county fairgrounds in Alcester, SD were a busy place from Thursday, July 31st through Saturday, August 2nd, as the Union County Fair took place for 2025. Fun was had with 4-H participants showcasing their skills and talents while the general public flocked to the fairgrounds to enjoy vendors, see exhibits and take part in many entertainment offerings.
