As 2025 comes to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made this year. It’s been a year of momentum, investment, and continued recovery - all focused on serving our residents and planning for a strong future.

Key projects in 2025 included the reconstruction of Penrose Drive as part of flood recovery efforts, along with major infrastructure upgrades like the Streeter Drive Water Treatment Plant Expansion and the Southwest Lift Station. The Union Crossing development officially broke ground, with its first two phases set to bring 110 new single-family homes, 100 apartment units, 77 townhome units, and approximately 10-12 new commercial businesses. Construction also began on the Lloyd apartment complex, which will add 116 additional apartment units to North Sioux City. Development activity overall was strong, with 82 building permits issued this year.

City parks received a refresh with updated signage and landscaping across all six locations. Grading also began on a new bike path that will connect North Sioux City to Dakota Dunes - an exciting project that will enhance access and recreation for residents when completed in 2026.

Behind the scenes, city departments worked hard to deliver the services residents rely on every day. The Police Department responded to more than 2,400 calls, while 36 Fire and EMS responders, including 25 volunteers, supported public safety across the community. At the library, nearly 17,000 visits were recorded and more than 60,000 books were borrowed.

Strengthening communication was another top priority. The City launched a monthly email newsletter, now reaching more than 600 subscribers, increased social media updates, and continued this Mayor’s Message column to help keep the community informed.

It’s been a meaningful year for North Sioux City, and the progress we’ve made together has laid a strong foundation for what’s ahead. I look forward to sharing what’s in store for 2026 in my January column.

Wishing you a safe and joyful holiday season, Mayor Chris Bogenrief
