Masons to serve Friends Feast

The June Friends Feast will be held on Monday, June 12, from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The meal will be provided by the Masons, with assistance from Horizon Health Care. Menu will be announced at a later date. All are welcome at this free community meal.

Murder suspect extradited back to SD

Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales was released from Webb County Jail in Laredo, TX on May 31 into the hands of another law enforcement agency and is being transported back to Union County, SD. Castellanos-Rosales is being charged with first-degree murder and a charge of seconddegree murder stemming from the death of 23-year-old Jordan “Jordy” Beardshear back on April 25. Authorities found Beardshear’s body inside her Dakota Dunes apartment on April 26.

Tyson to terminate jobs

Tyson Foods shared, in a press release, they will be terminating 262 corporate employees who were working at the Dakota Dunes location. Those in the corporate positions were offered the opportunity to keep their jobs if they relocated to Springdale, AK. The employees being terminated at the end of July chose not to relocate.

LifeServe donations

For over 15 years, Elk Point and surrounding communities have supported the local blood bank, LifeServe Blood Center, with at least six blood donation opportunities per year. Over the course of May, one blood drive was hosted to support the 150-plus local hospitals that LifeServe Blood Center serves. From this drive, 21 units of blood were collected which has the ability to save up to 63 local lives.

Fore the Cure recipients announced

This year’s Fore the Cure recipients were announced on May 16. Larissa Coulter Kommes and Jess LaFleur are both members in the Elk Point and Jefferson communities. Fore the Cure is an annual event meant to help those in the community come together to help others fighting cancer.

Searching for the current oldest living South Dakotan

Who is the oldest person you know in South Dakota? Each year, the South Dakota Health Care Association’s (SDHCA) Century Clubsm seeks to find the answer! If you know of a South Dakotan born in 1914 or earlier, making this person at least 109 years young, he or she may be our state’s oldest living person. SDHCA would like to honor him or her with the 2023 Centenarian of the Year award.

Inclusion field trips used as growing experience

The Elk Point-Jefferson 6th-12th grade Life Skills Special Education class recently participated in an Inclusion Field Trip in Vermillion. They weren’t the only school to attend, however, Beresford’s High School class also participated on May 4.

Union County now has 30 days to travel to Laredo, TX and pick up murder suspect Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales. Castellanos-Rosales was charged with first- and second-degree murder of 23-year-old Jordan Beardshear who was found inside her Dakota Dunes apartment April 26.
