Volunteer Fire Departments receive $5 million in grant funding

Two hundred and fifty-one (251) South Dakota volunteer fire departments from across the state, including five municipalities from Union County, have been awarded grants totaling $5 million in funding for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Earlier this year, the South Dakota Legislature passed and Governor Noem signed HB1127 appropriating state general funds to the Department of Public Safety creating the grant program to support local volunteer fire departments.

A former parish employee was charged by a Grand Jury on Nov. 8 for Grand Theft Aggregated after allegedly stealing money from two local Catholic churches.

Benefit to be held for Hanson

A benefit is being held to help with ongoing medical expenses for Mike Hanson of Jefferson. Hanson requires an extended hospital stay and extensive rehabilitation after damage to his lungs were found due to complications from chemotherapy, COVID-19 and over 50 years of farming dust.

Annual Thanksgiving Turkey Trot held

The Annual David Romo Memorial Turkey Trot occurred at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve on Thanksgiving morning this past Nov. 23, 2023. It was a volunteer fun run that runners, joggers and walkers enjoyed from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. before embarking on their holiday plans.

JBS to host Santa Paws Holiday photoshoot

Jefferson Beer Supply, local Siouxland brewery, will be hosting their second annual Santa Paws on Dec. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It’s a holiday photoshoot for your family and pet(s). Bring your dog, cat, rabbit, lizard or any other pet to come get photos taken with Santa Claus. Photography will be done by Cass Schmith of Back Roads Artistry. Each participant will receive three to five photos in an online gallery available the following day and one printed 5x7 which can be picked up in the taproom on or after Dec. 23.
