Most of us probably don’t spend much time thinking about City ordinances, but they shape many of the rules and expectations that affect everyday life in our community.
Over the past year, North Sioux City has been reviewing and updating many of its ordinances, particularly those related to land use, development, building requirements and code enforcement.
This work is intended to make City regulations more current, understandable and practical for the community.
For residents, that should mean less uncertainty when questions or concerns come up. Whether it involves property maintenance, parking, a building project or another neighborhood issue, updated ordinances will help spell out what is expected and what steps the City can take.
The City is also working to hire a full-time Building Official/Code Enforcement Officer. Having this position on staff will give residents and property owners someone at City Hall who can help answer questions, conduct inspections and work through code-related concerns as they arise.
The updates should benefit development, too. Builders, businesses and developers will have a more straightforward process that allows projects to move through review in stages, making the process more manageable for applicants and City staff while still ensuring City requirements are met.
Once the larger review is complete, the ordinances will be updated on the City’s website, making them easier to find, search and reference.
The goal is not to create more rules. It is to make sure our ordinances work the way they should for residents, businesses, developers and City staff.
It may not be the most exciting work happening at City Hall, but keeping these rules up to date is an important part of planning for North Sioux City’s future.
Warmly,
Mayor Chris Bogenrief
