A strong community does not happen by accident. It takes good people, steady effort, and thoughtful planning.

That is one reason North Sioux City’s draft Comprehensive Plan is so important. As this draft moves forward, we welcome the community to review it and share thoughtful feedback, whether by attending a public hearing or submitting comments by email.

The Comprehensive Plan is a long-range guide that helps the City make decisions about land use, housing, transportation, infrastructure, parks and open space, and neighborhood stability over time. It is meant to provide direction, support quality of life, and help ensure public investments are made responsibly.

This plan is not just about growth. It is about looking at the bigger picture of what makes North Sioux City a great place to live and planning carefully for the future. The draft addresses roads and utilities, parks and trails, housing needs, environmental and floodplain considerations, and the long-term strength of our neighborhoods and community.

Planning like this helps the City ask important questions before decisions are made. Where does future development make sense? What areas should be preserved? How do we maintain infrastructure, support housing, and protect community character over time? The Comprehensive Plan is designed to guide those decisions while still allowing flexibility as conditions change.

The draft plan can be reviewed by visiting https://northsiouxcity-sd.gov/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Full-Comp-Plan.pdf or by scanning the QR code. Community members are encouraged to attend either of the upcoming public hearings to learn more, ask questions, and share input that helps strengthen the plan. The Planning Commission Public Hearing will be held on April 22 at 4:00 PM, and the City Commission Public Hearing will be held on May 4 at 6:00 PM. Both meetings will take place at City Hall. Anyone unable to attend may also submit written comments by email to Andrew Nilges at Andrew.Nilges@ northsiouxcitydevelopment. com.

North Sioux City has a lot to be proud of, and one of the best things we can do as a community is take time to plan well. Thoughtful planning helps protect what people value and prepares us to make sound decisions in the years ahead. I hope you will take a few minutes to review the draft plan and share your input.

Warmly, Mayor Chris Bogenrief
