City approves severance agreement

The North Sioux City City Council met in regular session on April 15 to conduct many items, including canvassing the latest city council election and approving a severance agreement for former City Administrator Eric Christensen.

Dakota Valley board hears audit findings

New findings in regards to the yearly audit were presented to the Dakota Valley School Board at their meeting April 8. As is the case in most small towns or school districts, the audit report found a “significant deficiency resulting from the lack of segregation of duties.” The recommendation, per the norm, was to “recommend that district officials be cognizant of this lack of segregation of duties and attempt to provide compensating controls whenever and wherever possible and practical.”

Jefferson HS Gymnasium may be salvageable

As has become a norm for the Jefferson City Council, the meeting opened with discussions of the former Jefferson High School building. Previously, the high school and the gymnasium were red-tagged for demolition.

County declares property nuisance

The property located at 31798 475th Ave., Elk Point was declared a nuisance by the Union County Board of County Commissioners at their meeting on April 16. The owners are Richard and Wanda Jilderda.

City to take down ash trees

After careful consideration, the Elk Point City Council decided they would take down the ash trees throughout the city, instead of treating them. This is in relation to the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB), which infests the ash trees and ends up killing the tree. EAB has been detected in nearby communities including Dakota Dunes, Sioux Falls, Worthing, Canton and Lennox.

Union Bean Coffee set to open May 1

Union Bean Coffee Shop is scheduled to open its doors on May 1. They will offer a wide variety of coffees, espressos and other specialty coffee drinks including lattes and cappuccinos.

District 17 Legislative candidate arrested

Robin J. Schiro of Elk Point, who is seeking a seat as the District 17 State House of Representatives, was arrested on Wednesday, April 10 on charges of Obstructing Officer, Jailer, Firefighter.

Sundstrom’s 70-plus year membership celebrated

On April 8, 2024, the Alcester American Legion Post 86 celebrated it’s long time member, former Navy First Class Hospital Corpsman Charles “Chuck” Sundstrom for 72 years of membership in the American Legion. Sundstrom is a Korean War Veteran and served in the Navy from 1951-1955.
