On Tuesday, June 2, voters in North Sioux City will have the opportunity to participate in an important election. Voting is one of the clearest ways to make your voice heard, but it is also part of something bigger: a community where people stay informed, choose to serve, and bring ideas or concerns forward in a constructive way.

County‑Level Contested Races Union County voters will see several contested races on the June 2, 2026, primary ballot, according to the official publication bal‑lots released by the Union County Auditor and the South Dakota Secretary of State. The Republican primary includes competi‑tive races for sheriff, regis‑ter of deeds, three county commission districts and multiple legislative seats.

Memorial Day services will be held Monday, May 25, in Jefferson and Elk Point to honor those who died in military service. The first ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.

The Jefferson City Council ac‑cepted a donated memorial statue for the Main Street pocket park and delayed action on a proposed text‑alert system during its May 4 meeting at City Hall. Council President Michael Stokely led the meeting with mem‑bers Mark LaF‑leur, John Lok‑horst and Martin Nelkie present.

The Elk Point City Council moved through a light agenda May 4, ap‑proving a survey replat and renewing a slate of malt beverage licenses for the coming year. Mayor Deb McCreary led the meeting, with council members Brian Abraham, Renee Irwin, Ben Irlbeck, Meghan Aus‑tad and Kris Hurlbert present.

On May 1, EPJ Educators Rising hosted a Bingo fundraiser at the American Legion Post 134 in Elk Point. More than 100 community members attended the event, creating a fun evening while showing strong support for local students.

Several area high school seniors were recognized April 27 as part of the top 1 percent of South Dakota’s Class of 2026 at the 36th annual Academic Excellence Recognition luncheon. The event, hosted by Gov.

Union County commissioners raised the speed limit on a por‑tion of County Road 23, approved a zoning change in Dakota Dunes and moved forward on several ma‑jor highway projects during their April 28 meeting.

April 20, 2026 was the date for the Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District (CID) regular meeting, at the Welcome Center on Sioux Point Road, per the meeting minutes. It was called to order at 6:00 pm with members Scott Wetz, Ken Beaulieu, Dalton Hanson, Janet Finzen and William Shorma present. The CID Manager Andrew Tramp, legal counsel Darrell Jesse, CID employee Katelyn Irby, plus Union Country Sheriff Jim Prouty were also on-hand. In addition there were members of the general public who attended the meeting. They were: Larry Wiese, John D’Auguste, Wayne Bradshaw, Mark Brown, Robert Shuey, Brian Goeden, Boyd Allison, Shannon Hughes and Duane Quinn.
