It was a battle between Union County and Clay County law enforcement officers June 24 in Jefferson. The battle field was the ballpark and the game – softball. The purpose, however, wasn’t to show which county team was the best, but to raise money for Special Olympics South Dakota.

A hearing was held Monday morning, June 26 for the unexpected death of a woman found in her Dakota Dunes apartment in April. The suspect Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales is accused of killing Jordan Beardshear.

The priorities which led Paddy Rigg to run for the Ward 2 city council seat haven’t changed since becoming mayor in May. Rigg still wishes to see community improvements, especially the park and dilapidated properties.

The South Dakota Council for Exceptional Children (SD CEC) advocates, celebrates and helps to advance the success of children with exceptionalities. As par t of the work of SD CEC, the organization annually holds a statewide recognition program, entitled the “Yes I Can” awards program. This program honors and celebrates the achievements of children and youth (ages 2-21) with exceptionalities. The primary purpose of this award is to encourage individuals to seek their highest potential. The secondary goal is to increase public awareness of the abilities, aspirations, and personal qualities of those with exceptionalities.

U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson announced six South Dakotans have accepted Service Academy appointments. They will begin military training at their respective schools at the end of June. The Congressman nominated each student in December 2022; they received appointment offers between December 2022 and May 2023.

The City of North Sioux City Parks and Recreation held its annual Summer Recreation program June 5 through June 28. This year, the program was capped at 50 participants. People who live in North Sioux City, McCook Lake or Dakota Dunes can participate in this program.

The Izaak Walton League held their annual Youth Fishing Derby at McCook Lake Saturday, June 17. This year, 74 kids attended and ranged in ages from 2 up to age 18.

Older Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who served in Macedonia (now officially known as North Macedonia) from 2009 to 2012 have been gathering periodically around the United States at the homes of the returned Peace Corps Volunteers. The “get togethers” provide an opportunity to socialize, reminisce and visit other parts of the United States. Up to this point, the group has met in Colorado Springs, CO; Hampton, GA; Lake Forest, IL; and Ringoes, NJ. This year they chose to meet at Dave Johnson’s farm near Elk Point, SD.
