County approves TIF District, provisional budget

The creation of Union County TIF District #7 – Shay Road Development was approved at the Union County Board of County Commission meeting July 25. The TIF District is expected to help enhance the overall economic base of Dakota Dunes through infrastructure development and enhance value of real property in the district.

Dakota Valley students explore Italy, Spain

A Panther travel group, consisting of 15 students and 14 chaperones, took in the sights of Italy and Spain from June 12 through June 23. An incredible experience was had by all who attended. The trip was coordinated by Dakota Valley high school’s art teacher, Demi Harlan and Spanish instructor Amanda Valbuena.

Dakota Valley hosts Camp Invention

Ninety kids and eight high school volunteers participated in this year’s Camp Invention for 2023 at Dakota Valley. From May 30 to June 2, campers par ticipated in daily educational fun associated with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Residents of North Sioux City and Dakota Dunes gathered at a public open house sponsored by the South Dakota Department of Transportation to listen to presentation I-29. A public Open House was held Thursday, July 20 for those interested in an upcoming South Dakota Department of Transportation (DOT) project. A corridor study was conducted on Interstate 29, especially the on- and off-ramps for the exits into North Sioux City and Dakota Dunes.

Dooley announces resignation from Dakota Dunes CID

Jeff Dooley’s resignation was accepted after an executive session at the Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District (CID) Board of Supervisors meeting July 17. Dooley has been the District Manager of the CID for the last 23 years. His official resignation date is set for Sept. 1.

Former police officer sentenced to 37 months for possession of child pornography

A Wasilla, AK man was sentenced Friday, June 30 to 37 months in federal prison for possessing child pornography in his home. According to court documents, Matthew William Schwier, 39, knowingly possessed over 100 still images and multiple videos depicting children being sexually abused. Schwier pled guilty on August 31, 2022, to knowingly possessing child pornography. After serving his sentence, Schwier will be on federal supervised release for 7 years. Schwier will have to pay $15,000 in restitution to his victims.

Hansel named new StoneyBrook administrator

Lisa Hansel was recently hired as Administrator at StoneyBrook Suites Assisted Living in Dakota Dunes. In this role, Hansel oversees all operations at the facility. She is responsible for managing facility residency by guiding families through the assisted living process and maintaining the highest degree of resident satisfaction. Additionally, she leads and manages all facility staff to ensure excellence in level of care and service for residents.
