A nationwide program is coming to South Dakota and South Dakota officials are asking for the public’s help. The Safe Drinking Water Act is a nationwide health initiative to make sure that water pipes and drinking water are free of lead.

The 13th Annual “Be True to Your School” 5K was held on Saturday, August 5 at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve. Area schools and local runners could run hard to take top honors in the 5K challenge race or maintain a fun walk pace to support the nonprofit. Even a few bicycles and four-legged friends took part in the run.

Everyday people are needed to help improve the lives of children experiencing foster care. The Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program pairs volunteers with local children who are part of the child welfare system to ensure the children’s best interests are being met and they are getting the services and care they need.

The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, or known to all as simply RAGBRAI, occurred from July 23 to July 29. Many locals from Dakota Dunes and North Sioux City took part in this epic event which also was celebrating 50 years.

A 44-year-old male was stopped at mile marker 14 on Southbound I-29 early Tuesday morning, July 25 around 7:30 a.m. The male, from Watertown, SD, was reported to be a suicidal individual who had planned on committing suicide by cop.

CNOS was excited to join forces this year and be a part of the Siouxland Youth Sports Camp which occurred this past Friday, July 28. Siouxland Youth Sports Camp was held in conjunction with The Arena, United Sports Academy/CNOS Fieldhouse, and Long Lines Family Rec Center.

On August 14, 1997, Adams Homestead & Nature Preserve officially opened as a state park. They mark this very special occasion by having an annual festival on or around this day. This year Saturday, Aug. 12 has been selected as their festival date. Events will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

South Dakota water systems are asking residents to complete a quick five-minute survey as part of a statewide lead service line inventory. Residents will need a coin or key, magnet (any magnet will do) and smartphone to complete the survey.

With the growth within the city and a need for housing, the North Sioux City City Council began discussions for the development of the Southwest Sewer Lift Station in 2021. Now the project is moving forward and the city, in accordance with South Dakota Codified Law 9-48-15, can “require the owner of the property to pay the owner’s proportionate share of the cost of construction, without interest, according to the benefits to accrue to the property before the property may be platted, replatted or served by the facilities, as determined by the governing body.”
