The United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) NRCS serving South Dakota is announcing a round of ActNow funding for Union, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Moody and Brookings Counties. This opportunity is a special allocation of limited funds and will be distributed on a first come, first serve, basis.

The portion of Sioux Point Road between the River Valley Apartments and Shay Road was closed on March 6 in order for contractors to perform utility work. The North Sioux City City Council was informed at their April 3 meeting that the estimated 4-5 week closure was going to have to be extended.

The Union County Board of County Commissioners held a short meeting April 4. In their meeting, the board approved a contract with TopKote for chipseal and a voluntary right-of-way donation from Alan Sommervold.

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was detected in Dakota Dunes, SD in late January 2023. As a way to inform the residents of Dakota Dunes about the destructive insect, South Dakota State University Professor Dr. John Ball gave a presentation in March.

Freshmen, sophomores and juniors that serve on Dakota Valley’s student council went to Rapid City, SD on March 28 and 29 for the 2023 State Student Council Convention. The event was held at The Monument and included keynote speakers, multiple activities and a banquet. The theme for the convention was “Reaching for the Stars.”

The South Dakota Public Utilities Commission, after final deliberation, approved a settlement stipulation for MidAmerican Energy Co. to increase rates for natural gas service to customers in its South Dakota retail service territory at their regular meeting, March 28.

Science students in grades sixth-ninth showcased their knowledge in Science Olympiad on Saturday, March 25. The all-day event for South Dakota schools took place at the University of South Dakota and Vermillion High School. Dakota Valley won many honors. The team is coached by Eighth Grade Career Exploration teacher Amanda Vande Vegte and Sixth Grade Science instructor Lynda Grasso.
