State officials honored South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks conservation officers Friday for responding to over 30 rescue calls and saving about 60 people from flooding last month in the southeastern part of the state.

The Dakota Valley school board was busy in the second week of June with a regular session meeting and a work session on June 10th, as well as another work session on June 11th. The June 10th work session was called to order at 5:30pm by Chairperson Steve Kistner.

The Union County Board of Commissioners met for its regular session on June 25, 2024. One of the key topics addressed during the meeting was the current flood situation.

Tensions were high at the city council meeting held on Monday, July 1st in North Sioux City. It was a full room, as many were on-hand to hear from the local government regarding the recent flooding in the area. Residents also voiced major concerns about communication and relief efforts, or lack thereof, as it pertained to this disaster.

On July 3, Mayor Patti Teel called a special meeting to order at 7 p.m. with the city council and community members present. The agenda was approved with an addition regarding a fireworks permit request. Community department heads and community board reports were limited to three minutes.

In spite of Mother Nature’s worst, with flooding and road closures, the 2024 Clay-Union-Yankton County Horse Show went off as scheduled. It was a huge success, with more 4-H Exhibitors entering more events than in any show in recent memory.

The annual Jefferson Days of ‘59 Founders Festival is back, Thursday, July 11 to Sunday, July 14. This event celebrates the history of Jefferson with food, drink, some classic small-town fun and a wide range of activities for all ages.

The first of what will be many press conferences to address the area’s recent flooding was held near Izaak Walton McCook Lake on Sunday, June 30, at 4:45 p.m. It convened around 5:02 p.m.
