For many months, the fate of the Union County Fairgrounds has been deliberated by the Union County Board of County Commissioners. With the possibility of having to relocate the fairgrounds, the commissioners purchased what was known as the “Alcester Steakhouse” in attempts to have ground to relocate the fair.

Every job is important to the end

Hunter Sharkey started working for Aaladin as a summer job when an opportunity through the school presented itself. Seniors can participate in a job internship program to receive real world employment experiences. Aaladin was more than willing to participate in the program, giving Sharkey school credit and a paid internship.

2022 Blood Drive results

For over 15 years, Elk Point and surrounding communities have supported the local blood bank, LifeServe Blood Center, with at least six blood donation opportunities per year. Over the course of November, one blood drive was hosted to support the 150+ local hospitals that LifeServe Blood Center serves. They collected 17 units of blood which results in 51 has the ability to save up to 144 local lives.

The season of giving

Now is the time that people start to think about those that are less fortunate than themselves. Sometimes that means volunteering time or making donations to local food pantries, schools, churches or charities.

Gift Kicks Off “Operation: Mobility” for Disabled Access

The South Dakota Parks and Wildlife Foundation received a gift from the Steve Peterson Family of Salem, South Dakota. The gift is in memory of their wife and mother, Cathy. This donation is the lead gift to the Foundation, kicking off “Operation: Mobility,” a fundraising campaign to purchase up to 30 allterrain track chairs and trailers to be distributed throughout the state of South Dakota.

SDSU Extension welcomes new assistant professor and extension nutrition and health specialist

SDSU Extension is excited to welcome Graham (Geb) Bastian as a new Assistant Professor and SDSU Extension Nutrition and Health Specialist. Bastian will be based on the main SDSU campus in Brookings, where he will conduct applied research in nutrition education and behavior and provide evaluation support for Food and Families programming.

Social Security announces 8.7 percent benefit increase for 2023

Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits for approximately 70 million Americans will increase 8.7 percent in 2023, the Social Security Administration announced. On average, Social Security benefits will increase by more than $140 per month starting in January.
