Elk Point-Jefferson plans for Fall sports

Sports athletes and family members attended the Elk Point-Jefferson Fall Kickoff on Monday, August 5 to hear about what is ahead for the Huskies this school year and throughout the upcoming season. Superintendent Philip Schonebaum was the first speaker of the evening. He started the meeting with a discussion about having a good culture and embracing the EPJ school community as family.

The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) reminds the public to remain vigilant when recreating on lakes around the state as harmful algal blooms (HAB) can develop rapidly and without notice during the warm summer months.

Two reported cases of West Nile in Union County

The Union County Board of Commissioners convened for their regular session on July 23, 2024, at the Courthouse in Elk Point, SD. The meeting, commencing at 8:30 a.m., was attended by Commissioners Michael Dailey, Kevin Joffer, Richard Headid, and Tom Kimmel.

The CPL Russell N. Ferdig Memorial Bridge Ceremony was a heartfelt event that brought together community members and relatives to honor the memory of a Vietnam veteran. The dedication ceremony was a touching tribute to Ferdig and his service to the nation.

Adams Homestead gearing up for Celebration

Nature camp for 8-10 year olds was held at Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve on July 23-25. Many attended and enjoyed time outside and indoors at the visitor center.

Siouxland Miracle Riders annual ride

Siouxland Miracle Riders headed out on their 9th Ride for Miracles. The ride started on Saturday, July 27 and will go through Saturday, August 10 to help Siouxland Children.

SD couple debuts traveling art exhibit

The 2024-25 traveling art exhibit, “Both-And,” juxtaposes characteristically big, bold abstract paintings by artist Brian Joel Damon alongside subtle, organic photography by Paula Bosco Damon, a married couple from McCook Lake, S.D. The exhibit, now showing at the Betty Strong Encounter Center, 900 Larsen Park Road, Sioux City, combines 30 more recent works for the viewing public.

South Dakota requests Disaster Declaration

Governor Kristi Noem formally requested a major disaster declaration from the President for 25 counties due to the severe flooding that occurred in South Dakota between June 16 and July 8, 2024. Governor Noem signed Executive Order 2024-06 declaring the disaster. According to the National Weather Service, the rain event that created this flooding was a 1,000-year event.
