The Elk Point High School class of 1963 held it’s 60th class reunion the evenings of Oct. 6 and 7.

The Elk Point-Jefferson Marching Band attended the University of South Dakota Dakota Days Parade Oct. 7.

The Elk Point-Jefferson School District held their regular school board meeting on Oct. 11 and held discussion on school safety. The discussions revolved around SRP (Standard Response Procedures), cameras, noise/ voice/vaping alerts, all calls and handbooks.

The Dakota Valley administrators gave their monthly reports to the school board on Oct. 9. Kristi Maloney • Elementary Principal Sixty-six students were named Maloney’s October MVPs. (Pictures ran in last week’s edition). The MVPs celebrated with cookies.

The proposed Jan. 21, 2024, postage increase for community newspapers is nearly four times the rate increase proposed for other users of the mail. In an announcement last Friday, the United States Postal Service announced it expected a 7.3 percent increase for the local Within County mailing rate for newspapers.

A new business in Elk Point has surfaced from the collobaration of two women who enjoy spreading the joy of home-baked goods and sweets. Kathleen Chicoine and Marissa Tuttle upon meeting instantly developed a friendship and found they had the same passion for baking and soon Elk Point Harvest was created.

The North Sioux City Fire Department kicked off Fire Prevention Week with an Open House Sunday, Oct. 8. Children were able to take tours of the fire trucks and ambulances to see what the inside looked like, tour the fire station and go through a smoke trailer. Fire Department members were on hand to help answer questions and provide information to those interested in volunteering on the department.

The Annual Fran Moore Luncheon is upcoming. The Loaded Potato Bar will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Eagles Club in downtown Vermillion on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023 sponsored by Juno Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.
