Thermo Bond announces new CEO

Thermo Bond, a privately held company headquartered in Elk Point, SD, announced the appointment of Bill Riley as the company’s President and Chief Executive Officer effective June 1, 2023. Riley is a highly accomplished executive, boasting a remarkable track record of over three decades in high level accounting and finance.

Tyson to terminate jobs

Tyson Foods shared, in a press release, they will be terminating 262 corporate employees who were working at the Dakota Dunes location. Those in the corporate positions were offered the opportunity to keep their jobs if they relocated to Springdale, AK. The employees being terminated at the end of July chose not to relocate.

Purrs for June adopt a cat/kitten shelter month

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat/Kitten month and with good reason this is the time that shelters start to see an increase of cats, cats and more cats. June is peak kitten season where shelters see an influx of kittens.

City approves contract, updates garbage rates

The Elk Point City Council opened bids for the Emergency Storm Shelter Project at their meeting June 5. The shelter will be located in City Park just west of the current bathrooms at the end of the gravel turnaround area. Only one bid was received from Mart Brothers for $459,184.50 and was accepted by the council.

Operation Round-Up a successful donation drive

Jones Food Center and First Dakota National Bank combined efforts to help provide for the Elk Point, Jefferson and North Sioux City communities. From April 26 to May 16, the two businesses collaborated to hold Operation Round-Up. During the aforementioned time frame, patrons shopping at Jones Food Center could round-up their purchases to the nearest dollar and donate their change to the Elk Point Food Pantry. Once the round-up hit $1,000, Jones Food Center and First Dakota National Bank would each match the amount.

Thermo Bond donates to fire department

When the Elk Point Fire Department sent out letters asking for donations, Thermo Bond and their employees responded. On June 6, Thermo Bond presented the Elk Point Fire Department with a check for $2,500.

Jefferson approves laying hens

The owning and housing of laying hens were approved for two out of three properties inside Jefferson City limits at the last council meeting June 5. Variance requests were received from Joan Steckelberg at 111 Main Street and Jessica Praster at 708 Lincoln Street. The council approved Steckelberg for five laying hens and Praster for four.

Seniors named to AcademicAll-State teams

Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies who were named to the Class B Region 1 Academic All-State team were Ben Swatek, Evan Hailey, Hunter Geary, Jackson Prouty, Levi Miller and Ty Trometer. These seniors were named to the team because they met the requirements of having a GPA of 3.5 or above.
