EPJ Board discusses school safety

The Elk Point-Jefferson School District held their regular school board meeting on Oct. 11 and held discussion on school safety. The discussions revolved around SRP (Standard Response Procedures), cameras, noise/ voice/vaping alerts, all calls and handbooks.

NNA calls proposed new postal rates “punitive”

The proposed Jan. 21, 2024, postage increase for community newspapers is nearly four times the rate increase proposed for other users of the mail. In an announcement last Friday, the United States Postal Service announced it expected a 7.3 percent increase for the local Within County mailing rate for newspapers.

New bakery rises in Elk Point

A new business in Elk Point has surfaced from the collobaration of two women who enjoy spreading the joy of home-baked goods and sweets. Kathleen Chicoine and Marissa Tuttle upon meeting instantly developed a friendship and found they had the same passion for baking and soon Elk Point Harvest was created.

Juno Chapter holds Potato Bar

The Annual Fran Moore Luncheon is upcoming. The Loaded Potato Bar will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Eagles Club in downtown Vermillion on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023 sponsored by Juno Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star.

Union County 4-Her’s Compete at State Horse Show

The South Dakota State 4-H Horse Show took place July 24-26, 2023 in Pierre, SD. Union County 4-H Members Matthew Bryan and Kade Frank had the honor of riding in the American flag and signing the National Anthem to start the shows. Results from Union County are as follows: • Beginner Western Showmanship: Baylee Warner, 4th Place Beginner; Mya McCabe, White.

4-H Fall State Shoot Results

The South Dakota State Fall 4-H Shoot took place Sept. 8-10, 2023 in Mitchell, SD. 4-Her’s must shoot a minimum qualifying score throughout the season to be eligible for state. Results from Union County are as follows:

Contiguous sidewalks discussed

The Elk Point City Council held a short meeting as they discussed one item – sidewalks. Contiguous sidewalks needing to be updated or sections needing to be added were discussed amongst the council.

Jefferson city council discusses plats, park

At the September meeting, the Jefferson City Council approved a plat for land prior to accepting an offer from the Corio’s to purchasing the property. At the meeting on Oct. 2, the council approved a updated drawing of the plats from McLaury Engineering which reflected the new property line and descriptions. By doing this, it saves both the buyer and the seller from filing the plats twice.

County approves tower antennas, wiring

There is new development to the Union County Courthouse property after their meeting Oct. 3. The Union County Board of County Commissioners approved the quote from Calhoun Communications for the new tower antennas and wiring at a cost of $46,893.99.

State Historical Society seeks public input on preservation needs

The State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) of the South Dakota State Historical Society in Pierre is preparing for its federal fiscal year 2024 grant application and invites public comment through Nov. 1 on the state’s preservation needs and projects.
