People who survive on that morning cup of Joe will soon be happy as caffeine will soon become available on Main Street in Elk Point. Union Bean & Company plans to open in mid-December in the old Triumph Chiropractic building. Matt and Karissa Munce are leasing the building from Dr. Kirstin Carlson and are currently converting the inside.

On Nov. 9, the Elk Point-Jefferson National Honor Society met for its annual induction ceremony.

Representative Chris Kassin has announced that he will seek re-election in 2024 to the South Dakota State House of Representatives from District 17. Kassin was elected to his first term in the State House in November 2022.

The St. Joseph Catholic Church group served the Nov. 13 Friends Feast. Friends Feast is held monthly at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk Point. It’s open to everyone. Meals are provided by different community organizations in Elk Point. This month’s menu consisted of lasagna, garlic toast, tossed salad and cupcakes. They served 195 meals. Over 20 people attended the Elk Point City Council meeting, either in favor or against a zoning change that would take a property out of general business into multi-family district. The property in question is an empty lot at 801 East Main Street in between North Wood Street and North Green Street owned by Larry Brady (East River Properties, LLC) in Vermillion.

Staff from the office of U.S. Senator Mike Rounds will be conducting outreach in the community of Elk Point to assist residents with any issues they may have with federal agencies.

The holiday season is right around the corner and it comes with great news. According to a Gallup survey, 74 percent of holiday shoppers said they expect to pay about the same amount or more on holiday gifts this year compared to last.

Two people spoke at a public hearing on the first reading of Ordinance 2023-003 for changes to the ordinances in Union County. Mitch Peterson and Andrew Cronin spoke to the Union County Board of County Commissioners Nov. 14 at their meeting. Peterson spoke on raising the capacity of people at an event to 200 and Cronin touched on other various matters.
