The Women’s Wednesday Club is one of the oldest organized clubs in Elk Point and has continued as a literary club for 125 years. Preliminary work on a constitution was started in 1899 with seventeen women in the club.

The Elk Point City Council convened for a regular meeting on Monday, September 9, 2024, at 7:00 pm in the council chambers of City Hall. The meeting covered several critical agenda items and decisions. Mayor Deb Mc-Creary presided over the meeting with full attendance from council members, including Lance Penfield, Amanda Abraham, Renee Irwin, Kris Hurlbert, Kenneth VonHaden, and Ben Irlbeck. City Attorney Craig K. Thompson, City Administrator Derek Tuttle, Police Chief Dan Limoges, Finance Officer Erika Hammitt, and Public Works Director Trevor Job were also present.

The September 11th attacks on the United States happened 23 years ago. Yet, many can recall exactly where they were and what he or she was doing when the terrorist group, al-Qaeda, crashed passenger planes into the Twin Towers. No matter a person’s age, be it young or old, what happened on that fateful day is a core memory for all.

The Union County Board of Commissioners convened in regular session on September 3, 2024, at the Courthouse in Elk Point, SD. The meeting began promptly at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners Michael Dailey, Kevin Joffer, Richard Headid, and Tom Kimmel were present.

This year, the week falls on September 8-14, and there are fantastic activities planned to commemorate this important occasion.

In a thrilling finish at the South Dakota Senior Games, Darrel Carter emerged victorious in the 5K race, clinching first place in the 65-69 age bracket on August 10 in Pierre. Carter’s remarkable win came down to the wire, as he crossed the finish line just one second ahead of his closest competitor. This incredible achievement has brought recognition to Carter and opened the door to the prestigious Senior Nationals in Des Moines in July 2025.

The National Association of REALTORS (NAR) REALTOR Relief Foundation (RRF) is providing a substantial $250,000 in aid to support communities in Southeastern South Dakota affected by recent flooding from June 16th to July 8th. The areas impacted have been officially designated as disaster zones by both Governor Kristi Noem and President Joe Biden.
