Patricia Ann Olson was born Nov. 1, 1943, at Vermillion, S.D., to Philip and Mildred (Halderson) Ofstehage. She grew up on the family farm in rural Union County, S.D., and received her elementary education at the one-room Walnut Grove Country School.
