Callaghan named December Rotary Club Student of the Month

Renae Callaghan, a senior at Bishop Heelan High School, has been selected as the December 2023 Rotary Club Student of the Month. She will be honored during the Rotary Club meeting on Monday, Dec. 4, 12 p.m. at the MidAmerican Energy Community Room.

Student groups help rake lawns

The Dakota Valley junior high student council members and 8th graders in National Junior Honor Society helped out the community by raking up four residential yards on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

DV One Act ready to perform

Panther students with a love for theater auditioned for this season’s One Act during the week of Nov. 13-18. The advisor and director for Dakota Valley’s One Act program is high school teacher Anne Michaelson. “The play is The Best Play Ever Guaranteed by Alan Hahnel. It is a comedy about a writer and his friend and what it takes to get a manuscript published,” detailed Michaelson. “We will practice after school every night of the week except Thanksgiving and Christmas break.”

Dakota Valley Honor Band performs in Scotland

Region 1 Honor Band was held in Scotland, SD on Tuesday, Nov. 21 with multiple Dakota Valley band students in attendance. The music event included a full day of practice, in Scotland, which led up to a 6:30 p.m. concert in the evening.

Council tables nuisance ordinance

A nuisance ordinance was brought before the North Sioux City City Council on Nov. 20 after the council heard concerns about large rocks in the city’s right-of-way at their previous meeting Nov. 6. After discussion of the potential nuisance, City Administration drove through the entire city and found other potential right-of-way nuisance items as well as some that are unavoidable.

School board hears about bypass project

Stockwell Engineers appeared before the Dakota Valley School Board on Nov. 13 to inform them of the proposed bypass options for Northshore Drive. The project involves constructing a new road to the north of Dakota Valley High School. The goals of this project are to alleviate traffic and safety concerns on Northshore Drive and provide necessary utilities to the surrounding area to meet the needs of North Sioux City. The project improvements are expected to include new concrete surfacing, curb and gutter, storm sewer, water main, sanitary sewer and lighting.

Kassin to seek re-election to House

Representative Chris Kassin has announced that he will seek re-election in 2024 to the South Dakota State House of Representatives from District 17. Kassin was elected to his first term in the State House in November 2022.

Dakota Valley Panthers place in Mitchell debate

The Panther high school debate team was in Mitchell, SD on Nov. 17 and 18 to compete in the 31st annual Mc-Govern Speech and Debate Tournament. Four Dakota Valley students participated in individual events on Friday and 14 Panthers debated on Saturday for the team.
