NSC/DV Recreation Board and volunteers work to repair ballfields

The aftermath of the June 2024 flooding is ongoing as many throughout Union County continue to repair, renovate and help. The local sports complex in North Sioux City was hit hard when the Big Sioux River rose to record levels. The main baseball field was submerged and sustained the most significant damage. Despite the disastrous flooding, volunteer efforts have pulled together to make sure youth in the area are still able to play ball.

A time of thanks is happening on November 28, 2024 as many gather to celebrate Thanksgiving. Despite recent flooding and an anxious election year many still take time to show gratitude. Residents throughout Union County have been faced with a lot the past year. Yet, kindness and generosity always seem to take a front seat.

DV food service receives perfect score

On November 11, 2024, the Dakota Valley School District #618 Board of Education convened for a regular meeting at 6:00 PM. The session, was presided over by Chairperson Kistner, with board members Dooley, Nilges, Norby, and Kistner present. Member Thompson was absent.

Dooley hired as new NSC City Administrator

On November 18, 2024, the North Sioux City Council convened at 7:00 p.m. for its regular meeting, with Mayor Patti Teel presiding. The meeting was attended by Council members Kodi Benson, Gary Bogenrief, Jim Christenson, Joan Christiansen, Bob Davis, Lonnie Green, Lynn Hoffman, and Greg Meyer. Other city officials in attendance included City Finance Officer Amy Lilly and City Attorney Sarah Kleber.

DV Panthers sing at 72nd Annual All-State Choir

South Dakota’s 72nd Annual All-State Choir concert took place on Saturday, November 2, 2024 in Sioux Falls. The event was held at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center and hosted by the South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA).

Panther debate team competing well

Panthers on the high school debate team have been busy attending competitions prior to the Thanksgiving break. Two Dakota Valley debaters, Allee Murray and Rowen Higman, traveled to Sioux Falls Washington on November 15, 2024. Then on November 19, 2024 the Panthers had 4 students debating at Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Murray and Higman participated in the Extemp category at the Sioux Falls Washington debate contest. Extempt is short for “extemporaneous”. Both DV competitors garnered 11th place in their respective matches per Debate Coach Andrew Stewart.

DV Quiz Bowl season in full swing

The Quiz Bowl season is in full swing for Dakota Valley as they took 4 teams to West Central on Monday, November 18, 2024. The Panther high school squads were made up of 3 or 4 participants and showcased the intellect and knowledge coming out of the DV.

Wounded Warriors Project benefit

On December 8th, the Marquee in Sioux City will transform into a hub of community spirit as residents come together to support the Wounded Warriors Project, an organization dedicated to assisting veterans injured in combat. Hosted by community members John Glaza, Rose Gilman, and Bill (Chopper) Pelchat, this benefit promises to be an afternoon filled with music, camaraderie, and the collective effort to aid those who have bravely served our nation.

SDSU Extension 4-H State Ambassadors for 2024-25 announced

South Dakota State University Extension 4-H is pleased to announce the youth chosen as State 4-H Ambassadors for the coming year. The State 4-H Ambassador program provides leadership and mentoring opportunities as participants support 4-H and serve as positive role models.
