Toads, tunes, and more: Jefferson’s Days of ’59

Each July, the town of Jefferson, South Dakota, comes alive with the Jefferson Days of ‘59 Celebration. This five-day festival honors the community’s founding spirit with a blend of tradition, fun, and smalltown pride. This year’s celebration takes place from Wednesday, July 9, to Sunday, July 13, 2025, and the schedule is packed with activities for all ages.

Picklefest hosted by JBS

Jefferson Beer Supply is hosting a three-day celebration of all things pickle on July 11, 12, and 13. They will have pickle-flavored ale and food.

Castellanos-Rosales guilty

It was a big day on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the Elk Point courthouse as the jury handed down a guilty verdict in the murder trial involving Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales and the stabbing of Jordan (Jordy) Beardshear. For almost two weeks, the court had been in session as state prosecutors and the defense team for Castellanos-Rosales presented their sides of the case.

WWII vet Thorton on Honor Flight

On June 3, 2025, North Sioux City resident Leo Thorton, a World War II Navy veteran, embarked on a meaningful journey as part of the Midwest Honor Flight, a program dedicated to honoring veterans by providing them with an opportunity to visit Washington, D.C., and reflect on their service.

DV appoints Oberg as Director of Operations

The Dakota Valley School District Board of Education convened its regular meeting on June 9, 2025, at 6:04 PM in the Dakota Valley Board Room. Chairperson Kistner called the meeting to order, with all board members— Hanson, Kistner, Nilges, Norby, and Thompson— present. District administrators, including Superintendent Dr. Warzecha, incoming Superintendent Garrett Schmidt, and Business Manager Sponder, also attended. The agenda was amended and approved without opposition, and no new conflict of interest disclosures were presented.

DD HOA annexes Shay Road development

Neighborhood representatives for the Dakota Dunes Homeowners Association (HOA) met on June 2, 2025 in order to vote on the annexation of the Shay Road Development into the community’s HOA. After discussion and a paper ballot voting process it was determined that the Dakota Dunes HOA would annex the development.
