DV Quiz Bowl Conference Champs

The Dakota Valley high school quiz bowl team travelled to Dell Rapids on Monday, March 20 for the DAK12 Conference tournament. It was a great showing by the Panther team as they were crowned conference champions in a tiebreaker win versus the Vermillion Tanagers.

Art students win awards at the “BIG Show”

Dakota Valley high school artists expressed their creative talent in Wakefield, NE on Wednesday, March 15 for the “BIG Show”. This event has been conducted annually for 13 years and is a day to highlight and award local area students and their artwork. Demi Harlan, the high school art teacher at DV, was pleased with how well the Panthers represented at this event.

DV students win awards at Art Wars, State competition

Art students from Dakota Valley flocked to West River for South Dakota’s Art Wars and the state’s art show competition over the weekend of March 18. Both events were held in The Monument in Rapid City. Panther artists showed their creativity and artistic ability well, with many earning honors.

Board approves additional positions

Three additional positions were approved for the 202324 school year at the Dakota Valley School Board meeting March 13. The first position is a certified EL teacher and the second an additional SPED teacher.

DV senior Lexi Squier serves as Senate Page

Dakota Valley senior Lexi Squier recently returned home from the state capital after engaging in a firsthand account of the 2023 South Dakota Legislature as a senate page. It was a worthwhile experience for Squier who plans to attend Northwestern College in Orange City, IA next year and double major in business administration and theater.

Big Sioux Bike Bridge discussed

A project in conjunction with the city of Sioux City could soon connect Dakota Dunes' trail system with Sioux City’s. The Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District (CID) Board of Supervisors discussed the connection at their meeting March 20.

Board denies five property valuation grievances

The North Sioux City Council convened on March 21 as the regular council, but also held a prior meeting as the Local Board of Equalization. There were five grievances to hear from North Sioux City residents contesting their assessed property values.

STATE CHAMPIONS

The winter weather advisory in southeast South Dakota could not stop the Dakota Valley boys basketball team from rolling past Hot Springs in the 1st round of state tournament play. The Panthers won big, versus the Bison, by a score of 80-47 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls on March 16.

Election integrity bill passes

An election integrity bill, supported by South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, passed another legislative hurdle Wednesday, March 1. Senate Bill 207 would strengthen the ban on the inappropriate use of taxpayer dollars to influence the outcome of an election.

Noem proclaims Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day

Governor Kristi Noem, in coordination with the South Dakota Depar tment of Veterans Affairs, is proclaiming Wednesday, March 29, 2023, as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Recognition Day.” The Governor and the Department are calling on all South Dakotans to recognize the courage, service and sacrifice of the men and women who served during the Vietnam War. More than 27,000 South Dakotans were called upon to stand up and fight.
