Students from Elk Point‑Jefferson’s Structured Learning Center (SLC) are spending part of their school days throughout the semester helping de‑liver single‑copy newspapers for the Leader‑Courier, gaining hands‑on ex‑perience in a real workplace as part of their Community‑Based Instruction (CBI) program.

For some, 2001 was a very long time ago. Yet, memories of the 9/11 attacks that year never fade from the mind’s eye. Many still see the Twin Towers on fire or recall the gripping confusion and fear as people tried to reach loved ones they knew in New York City. America, and the world, mourned when terrorists hijacked four commercial aircrafts to use as weapons. Two planes crashed into skyscrapers in lower Manhattan and another hit the Pentagon in Washington D.C. The fourth aircraft was downed in a field thanks to brave passengers who overpowered the terrorists. The attack was horrific and it is an episode of history that will never be forgotten.

The Union County Board of Commissioners worked through a wide range of construction updates, department requests and contract approvals Tuesday morning, taking action on several items tied to ongoing building projects and county operations. The board met Sept. 1 at Elk Point City Hall with all members present.
