County terminates contract for jail meals

The Union County Board of County Commissioners listened to concerns raised from Union County Sheriff Dan Limoges and Secretary Tracy Smith about the meals being provided to inmates at their meeting June 27.

VanBeest joins council

The VanBeests became a part of the Jefferson community seven years ago. Now, John VanBeest is going to be taking on a more important role in the community – city council member.

Update to Jefferson Days schedule

Since the printing of the Jefferson Days of ’59 schedule in last week’s paper, there have been some updates. 

An event on Wednesday was not included in our printed schedule. The annual Texas Hold ’Em tournament will be held at 7 p.m. at Bud’s Bar.

Malli’s on Wheels will be at Jefferson Beer Supply (JBS) on Thursday, July 13 from 5 to 9 p.m. Tako N’ Madre will now be at JBS Friday, July 14 from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday evening’s performance by Special K Bubbles the Clown will now be replaced by a balloon twister.

Jefferson prepares for Days festivities

The biggest party in Jefferson is set to kick off next week. Jefferson Days of ’59 is a five-day event centered on downtown Jefferson July 12-16.

Area law enforcement raises money

It was a battle between Union County and Clay County law enforcement officers June 24 in Jefferson. The battle field was the ballpark and the game – softball. The purpose, however, wasn’t to show which county team was the best, but to raise money for Special Olympics South Dakota.

Judge changed in Dakota Dunes murder trial

A hearing was held Monday morning, June 26 for the unexpected death of a woman found in her Dakota Dunes apartment in April. The suspect Alfredo Castellanos-Rosales is accused of killing Jordan Beardshear.

Improvements still a priority

The priorities which led Paddy Rigg to run for the Ward 2 city council seat haven’t changed since becoming mayor in May. Rigg still wishes to see community improvements, especially the park and dilapidated properties.

Returned Peace Corps Volunteers Gather

Older Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who served in Macedonia (now officially known as North Macedonia) from 2009 to 2012 have been gathering periodically around the United States at the homes of the returned Peace Corps Volunteers. The “get togethers” provide an opportunity to socialize, reminisce and visit other parts of the United States. Up to this point, the group has met in Colorado Springs, CO; Hampton, GA; Lake Forest, IL; and Ringoes, NJ. This year they chose to meet at Dave Johnson’s farm near Elk Point, SD.
