Youth discipleship members volunteer

Youth discipleship members from Elk Point-Jefferson and Dakota Valley met in Sioux City on Wednesday, October 30 to pack food totes for students in need. The middle schoolers, all parishioners from St. Joseph’s in Elk Point, St. Peter’s in Jefferson or St. Teresa’s in Dakota Dunes, were a great help to the nonprofit.

County discusses District 3 vacancy

On October 29, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., the Union County Board of Commissioners convened for a regular session, with key members including Michael Dailey, Kevin Joffer, Peggy Ustad, and Tom Kimmel present. The session began with a motion proposed by Commissioner Dailey and seconded by Commissioner Kimmel to approve the meeting agenda. An amendment was introduced to remove the Cup of Joy LLC’s Liquor License hearing while adding a significant discussion regarding the District 3 position and future actions. This amendment was carried.

Elk Point-Jefferson board discusses 2024-25 goals

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, the Elk Point-Jefferson Board of Education convened for a regular session at 5:30 PM in the high school’s study hall. Under the leadership of President Travis Geary, the meeting kicked off with several key members present, including Noelle Jacobs and Kyle Hanson. Board members Sabrina Sayler and Tim Brewer were absent. Other attendees included Superintendent Philip Schonebaum, Business Manager Heather Watterson, Principal Laura Throener, and Principal Skyler Eriksen, who contributed their insights throughout the meeting. However, Technology Coordinator Myles Larsen and K-12 Dean of Students/Activities Director Justin Clercx were absent.

Curry inducted into SDSU Hall of Fame

Melissa (Peter) Curry knows a lot about commitment and hard work thanks to her years of playing and coaching softball. She also understands the importance of teamwork and camaraderie. Recently the Osage, Iowa native and Elk Point resident emphasized these attributes and more as she was inducted into the Jackrabbit Sports Hall of Fame at South Dakota State University on September 14, 2024.

Headid suspends participation voluntarily

The Union County Board of Commissioners convened for their regular session on October 15, 2024, at the Courthouse in Elk Point, SD. The meeting commenced at 8:30 a.m. and was attended by Commissioners Michael Dailey, Kevin Joffer, Richard Headid, Peggy Ustad, and Tom Kimmel. One of the decisions made during the meeting was the approval of the agenda, with the addition of a potential county burn ban. This motion was put forward by Kimmel and seconded by Dailey, and it was carried.

Girl Scouts making a difference with bronze award project

The Elk Point-Jefferson Girl Scout Troop 161 is on a mission to make a difference in their community through their Bronze Award project. This group of ten junior Girl Scouts, consisting of 4th and 5th graders, has been working with the Sleep in Heavenly Peace Organization in Sioux City to provide bedding for those in need. Their dedication and hard work have already made a significant impact, and they continue spreading the word about their upcoming bedding drive.
