Schonebaum elected to Beadle Club

Superintendent Philip Schonebaum was elected as a South Dakota Beadle Club member at 10:30 am on February 5 in Pierre, South Dakota. The purpose of the Beadle Club is to signally honor selected individuals in South Dakota who have given meritorious service in the cause of education over the years. This service must be aside from and in addition to their regular contributions made in their official capacities.

City to maintain current library operations

The Elk Point City Council regular session was held on February 3, 2025, at 7:00 p.m, presided over by Mayor McCreary. All council members were present, including Abraham, Irwin, Penfield, Irlbeck, Hurlbert, and VonHaden, along with City Attorney Thompson, City Administrator Tuttle, Police Chief Limoges, Public Works Director Job, and Finance Officer Hammitt.

EPJ at Region 1A One-Act Play Festival

Elk Point-Jefferson’s cast and crew, for the 2024-25 One-Act season, were up early on January 28, 2025 for the Region 1A One-Act Play Festival. The event took place at Vermillion High School and the Huskies were first to take the stage. They performed the comedy Bobby Wilson Can Eat His Own Face by Don Zolidis.

Horizon Build Dakota Scholarships now open

Applications are open for the 2025-2026 academic year for scholarships Horizon Health made available through a partnership with the Build Dakota Scholarship Program. Full-ride scholarships are provided to successful candidates by the Build Dakota Scholarship Program.

DOR Motor Vehicle services not available during 605Drive transition

The Department of Revenue’s Motor Vehicle Division will launch a new title and registration system, 605Drive, on February 17, 2025. Training for the new system began on December 9, 2024, with basic trainings for county and internal users.

YMCA partners with EPJ

The Siouxland YMCA is excited to announce a new partnership with the Elk Point-Jefferson School District to bring Y Club After-School Care to families in the community. Beginning in March, Y Club will offer safe, structured, and enriching after-school programming at 402 S. Douglas St, Elk Point, SD, 57025.

Elk Point Ambulance Board celebrates Vinzant

The Elk Point Community Ambulance Board celebrated one of their own recently as they recognized Joann (Staum) Vinzant for her 35 years of service. A native of Elk Point, Vinzant joined the town’s ambulance team in the 1980s as an emergency medical technician (EMT). She later became a valued board member.

Harkness retires, Langley promoted

On January 21, 2025, the Union County Board of Commissioners convened for their regular session at the Courthouse in Elk Point, South Dakota. The meeting began promptly at 8:30 a.m. and was attended by Commissioners Michael Dailey, Tom Kimmel, Kevin Joffer, and Peggy Ustad.
