This past month, the City Commissioners and I reviewed the proposed budget for 2026. As always, our goal is to maintain the high level of service our residents expect while keeping the tax burden as low as possible. I’m proud to say this year’s budget reflects that balanced approach.

The proposed budget supports a number of community priorities. It includes funding for major flood recovery projects like the permanent reconstruction of Northshore Drive and new lift stations to better protect our neighborhoods. It also continues our investments in growth, housing, and local business expansion, backed by $18.5 million in federal funding and nearly $11 million in state loans and grants. These resources allow us to move forward with key infrastructure while planning responsibly for the years ahead.

We’re also in a unique financial position thanks to the strength of our local business community. Did you know that nearly 70% of North Sioux City’s annual revenue comes from sales tax? That adds up to about $4.8 million per year - an extraordinary number for a city of just over 3,000 people. For comparison, Yankton brings in about $14.1 million in sales tax with a population of 15,400, which equals roughly $916 per resident. Vermillion collects $6.2 million with 11,700 residents, or about $534 per resident. In contrast, North Sioux City generates approximately $1,580 per resident, showcasing just how unique we are as a small community with one of the strongest business bases in the region.

I’m grateful to serve a city that continues to plan wisely, invest boldly, and work together to shape a bright future.

Warmly, Mayor Chris Bogenrief
