Just over a month ago, I stepped into the role of mayor with one goal at the forefront: to serve the people of North Sioux City with transparency, accountability, and heart. I want to thank each and every one of you who put your trust in me and the newly elected commissioners. We know that trust is earned over time, and we are committed to open communication and meaningful action.
Nearly a year has passed since the flood changed so much in our community. I know many of you are eager to see more visible progress, and I share that urgency. We are working to accelerate the timeline on recovery and long-term solutions. Last month, our City Administrator and I traveled to Washington, D.C., where we had the opportunity to meet with Senators Mike Rounds, Congressman Dusty Johnson and staff with the Department of Homeland Security (who oversees FEMA). All expressed strong support for North Sioux City and are helping push forward the timeline for permanent flood mitigation plans.
We have also begun meeting with city department leaders to better understand current priorities and ensure resources are being used effectively. On the ground, flood recovery projects continue. The restoration work at McCook Lake led by South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks is underway with local contractor Three Oaks, Inc. leading the effort. The reconstruction of Penrose Drive is also scheduled to begin soon.
To help keep you informed, we recently launched a new city email newsletter that will regularly provide you with updates, project news, and community highlights. You can sign up at www.northsiouxcity- sd.gov. We encourage you to help us spread the word.
There is more to come, and we are focused on moving forward. Thank you for the opportunity to serve this community. I am proud to call it home.
Warmly, Mayor Chris Bogenrief
