RENO In 2020, the commission started looking at solutions to address the lack of space within the current court‑house. The former commu‑nity room was renovated several years ago to serve as a second courtroom at the request of the judicial system and judges who serve Union County. Avail‑able “vault” space within the current Auditor’s, Treasurer’s, Register of Deeds and Clerk of Courts offices has presented chal‑lenges to the department heads of these agencies. State laws and regula‑tions require the preser‑vation of certain types of documents. Our county de‑partments have scanned and continue to scan and upload documents which are stored in the county’s “main computer” server. But some of the county of‑fices mentioned are still required to maintain and store the original docu‑ments and records. Joffer said that he and Commis‑sioner Daily recently went through our largest vault located in the basement of the courthouse. We came across documents dated as far back as the 1870s and 1880s. The penmanship of the county employees making entries into large record‑keeping books was amazing.
On March 31, 2026, the Union County Commission‑ers accepted the low bid of $5,780, from “L&L Build‑ers based in Sioux City, IA. The commission voted unanimously to accept the bid. The bid will cover renovations and additional square footage to the exist‑ing Union County Court‑house.
