Council schedules budget hearing

The Elk Point City Council on Aug. 4 approved two survey plats, scheduled upcoming budget discussions, and welcomed the city’s new building official during its regular meeting.

2025 Fall coaches at EPJ

It is still summer, but the Elk Point-Jefferson school district has been busy gearing up for autumn activities in 2025. A fall sports kickoff meeting occurred on July 23, 2025 and practices are almost ready to start, or have commenced, for the Huskies. Many familiar faces are back in the roles of fall coaches for EPJ. Justin Clercx continues in his role as activities director for the Huskies.

Union County Fair celebrates 95th year

The county fairgrounds in Alcester, SD were a busy place from Thursday, July 31st through Saturday, August 2nd, as the Union County Fair took place for 2025. Fun was had with 4-H participants showcasing their skills and talents while the general public flocked to the fairgrounds to enjoy vendors, see exhibits and take part in many entertainment offerings.

DV Senior Legion team shows grit at state

Milbank, South Dakota was the destination for Dakota Valley’s Senior Legion baseball team as they made their way there for the state tournament on August 1-5, 2025. Strong regional play combined with an overall 17-6 record had strong energy following the team from North Sioux City.

DV Sideline Cheer

It will be football season soon and sideline cheer tryouts have already taken place for Dakota Valley as everyone gears up for Friday Night Lights in 2025. Thirteen student athletes were selected to be a part of the Panther sideline cheer squad for football. A mixture of upperclassmen seniors and juniors in addition to some sophomores make up the team.

As the Panther community gears up for an unforgettable Homecoming 2025, school spirit will soar into the cosmos with this year’s theme: “Out of This World!” From September 1–5, students and families can expect an orbit of creativity, celebration, and DV pride.

EPJ rebounds with 13-1 win after tough doubleheader

Elk Point-Jefferson’s junior legion baseball team had a trio of games to end the month of July. On July 28, 2025 the Huskies faced two tough ball clubs in Dakota Valley (DV) and Beresford. The next day, they were up against Canton and secured a big victory 13-1.

EPJ vocalists shine at statewide honor choir in Aberdeen

South Dakota’s 51st Senior High School Honor Choir Performance took place on Friday, July 25, 2025 and three Elk Point-Jefferson students were a part of the talented ensemble. The concert happened in Aberdeen, SD and included the singing talents of Carter Heckathorn, AnnaBeth Porter and Andrew Quiett.

August Friends Feast

The aroma of simmering spaghetti sauce will welcome guests to Immanuel Lutheran Church on Monday, Aug. 11, as the Elk Point Chamber of Commerce prepares to host the August Friends Feast community meal. From 5:30 to 7 p.m., neighbors, families, and friends will gather for a warm plate of spaghetti, dessert, and shared conversation— all free of charge.
