EPJ Huskies National Honor Society induction

Elk Point-Jefferson inducted their 2024 National Honor Society members on Thursday, November 14, 2024. The ceremony took place at 7:30 pm in the Husky’s high school gymnasium.

Torrez resigns as County auditor

On November 12, 2024, the Union County Board of Commissioners held a regular session at the Courthouse in Elk Point, South Dakota. The meeting commenced at 8:30 a.m., with four members present: Michael Dailey, Kevin Joffer, Peggy Ustad, and Tom Kimmel. The agenda was approved with two significant additions: an Associated Consulting Engineering Contract and a discussion regarding the Auditor vacancy.

EPJ riding in style with Foreman Busing

The Elk Point-Jefferson School District is excited to have an outstanding partnership with Foreman Busing, a leading provider of transportation services. Foreman Busing provides transportation services for all bus routes and activity routes. Foreman Busing has recently added a new executive coach bus to its fleet, primarily for the athletic and activity programs at the school.

EPJ board approves settlement with First Student Inc.

The Elk Point-Jefferson Board of Education convened for its regular session on November 11, 2024, at 5:30. The meeting brought together several board members, including President Travis Geary, Tim Brewer, Kyle Hanson, and Sabrina Sayler, though Noelle Jacobs was absent. They were joined by Superintendent Philip Schonebaum, Business Manager Heather Watterson, and various other staff members, including Principals Skyler Eriksen and Laura Throener, K-12 Dean of Students/Activities Director Justin Clercx, and Technology Coordinator Myles Larsen.

EPJ attends SDMEA Freshmen Festival

The South Dakota Music Education Association held their Freshmen Festival on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Elk Point-Jefferson’s Veronika Norby was nominated and attended the day-long festival in Salem, South Dakota.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane Tech Day and dress rehearsals

The cast and crew for Dakota Valley’s dramatic rendition of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane has been working hard the past few weeks. Opening night for the play is set for Friday, November 15 at 7 pm. A second, and final, show will happen on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Both shows will take place in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) of the DV middle school.

Brown runs 24 hours for local flood relief

Katy Brown, of Jefferson, lives with a family of runners. Her two sons, Jack and Cole, were both 2024 cross country state medalists for Dakota Valley. The two can be seen often jogging throughout the local area. Her husband, Shawn, has run marathons, and Brown herself stays active by running. In late October, she decided to put the good habit to even better use in order to help a flood victim from McCook Lake, SD.

Fluellen, former Detroit Lion, speaks at local schools

More than just an election was happening in Union County on Tuesday, November 5, 2024. Local schools, Dakota Valley and Elk Point-Jefferson, both welcomed a guest speaker in retired professional football player Andre Fluellen. He spoke at DV in the morning and EPJ later that day.

Annual Christmas at the Homestead

Vehicles filled the parking lot and extended out to the street as volunteer parking attendant Tom Jacobs directed traffic for the annual Christmas at the Homestead. The event ran from noon to 4 pm on Saturday, November 9, 2024, at the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve. Rainy drizzle and cooler temperatures did not deter the crowd and it was a well attended event in McCook Lake.
