School board approves 2023-24 budget

The 2023-24 Annual Budget was approved at the Dakota Valley School Board’s meeting Sept. 11. The tax levies were determined as follows: AG – $1.320 per $1,000; Owner-Occupied – $2.954 per $1,000; NA/Utilities – $6.113 per $1,000 and Total Valuation – $1.500 per $1,000. Board requests maximum property tax dollars

With a scheduled hour delay start to their meeting, the Dakota Dunes Community Improvement District Board of Supervisors met Sept. 18.

Revisions made to ordinance

By Beth Hutcheson times1reporter@gmail.com The first reading for the reformation of the Parks and Recreation Board was held at the North Sioux City City Council meeting Sept. 18. Administration presented revisions to the city’s current ordinance. In the revision, it struck out many areas and added some clarifications. Some areas within the ordinance were struck out completely that included, recommendations by resolution, annual report and authority. The board makeup will consist of five members with one alternate member with one board member being from the business community. All members will be approved by the city council.

Breed continues to be busy as a bee

The saying “busy as a bee” can be taken literally by former Dakota Valley guidance counselor Phil Breed who has not slowed down since retiring at the end of the 2023 school year. In addition to being the assistant cross country coach still at DV, Breed has also amped up his beekeeping activity. Working with bees takes place at Breed’s farm south of Beresford and also extends to the Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve in North Sioux City.

Answering a call to help the elderly

It’s not uncommon to see advertisements on TV featuring starving children or animals and how people, for a certain amount of money a month, can sponsor them and make a change in that person or animals life. Thanks to a Wynstone resident, one of the elderly in Honduras has been helped for the last 13 years.

Schenzel named New VSO of the Year

The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs (SDDVA) recognized five of their partners for outstanding commitment, leadership and dedication to serving veterans and their families. The award ceremony was held in Sioux Falls during the Department’s annual veterans’ benefits training conference for county and tribal veterans service officers (VSO).

Kual, Meyer reign over 2023 Dakota Valley Homecoming

Homecoming coronation for Dakota Valley was held in the Performing Arts Center on Monday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The evening was hosted by freshmen Asher Pfiefer and Coryn Kimbell who served as the masters of ceremonies. Each high school grade performed a skit prior to the introductions of the 2023 homecoming court.
