City to take preemptive measures for ash trees

The Elk Point City Council discussed Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) at their meeting April 3 and how it could impact the city. City Administrator Derek Tuttle informed the city council that EAB has been detected in Union County, but not within Elk Point.

Jefferson council moves forward with lawsuit

The Jefferson City Council meeting April 3 opened with an executive session for legal matters. After about 20 minutes, the council reconvened and decided to move forward with a lawsuit concerning the former Jefferson High School building. The city is seeking damages for breach of contract, nuisance and violations of city ordinances. According to Beacon, a website utilized by Union County, John Wakefield is the owner of the former Jefferson High School building.

Board holds short meeting

The Union County Board of County Commissioners held a short meeting April 4. In their meeting, the board approved a contract with TopKote for chipseal and a voluntary right-of-way donation from Alan Sommervold.

Treat or take down: ‘There’s no hope for ash trees’

Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was detected in Dakota Dunes, SD in late January 2023. As a way to inform the residents of Dakota Dunes about the destructive insect, South Dakota State University Professor Dr. John Ball gave a presentation in March.

Friends Feast to be served

Friends Feast will be held on Monday, April 10 from 5:30-7 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. The meal will be provided by Union County Electric Coop. The menu will consist of chili and cinnamon rolls.

Actors take to the stage

The Elk Point-Jefferson theatre students once again took the stage to perform ‘When Bad Things Happen to Good Actors’. The play is a play within a play.

Horizon Health Care recognized for expanding family planning services

Horizon Health Care received the Partner in Health Award from the South Dakota Department of Health, particularly for their efforts surrounding Family Planning. Horizon’s Family Planning Program services include pregnancy testing, education, counseling and screenings to provide patients with personalized care while growing a family.
