This past month, North Sioux City had the opportunity to participate in the Tri-State Governors’ Conference, hosted right here in Siouxland. It was an honor to be part of this longstanding tradition that brings together leaders from South Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska to focus on the shared opportunities and challenges we face as a region.

Our city was well represented at the event. I was proud to introduce South Dakota’s Lieutenant Governor Larry Rhoden during the luncheon, and City Administrator Jeff Dooley delivered a key presentation about the urgent need to reevaluate the 1976 flood mitigation plan that affects communities along the Big Sioux River. The 2024 flood made it clear that past infrastructure plans no longer reflect today’s realities. Together with Union County, Sioux City, and Dakota Dunes, we are urging federal and state partners to support a new study that can better protect our communities for the future.

Collaboration across state lines is something this region has embraced for decades, and it’s more important now than ever. As we work toward longterm flood solutions, we’re also seeing tangible progress on the ground here at home.

I’m pleased to share that the reconstruction of Penrose Drive is now majority complete. This project was a key part of our local flood recovery efforts and an important step in restoring access and safety in one of the hardest-hit areas. Thank you to the crews and contractors who worked diligently to get it done.

As always, I’m grateful for the opportunity to serve this resilient and forward-looking community. Together, we’re not only recovering, we’re building a stronger future.

Warmly, Mayor Chris Bogenrief
