If O’Malleyed were a verb, it would describe perfectly how the girls basketball team lost a home game 52-44 to the Irene-Wakonda Eagles Tuesday, Dec. 31.
The O’Malley sisters, Nora and Malloy, combined for 41 points to lead their team.
The refs used their whistles freely in the game, calling a total of 38 fouls. Riley Donnelly picked up her 3rd foul early in the 2nd quarter and had to sit out the rest of the half. I-W also packed the lane, and the Huskies couldn’t get the ball inside, having to resort to jump shots.
Still, EPJ was in the game, leading 22-21 in the 3rd quarter when they were O’Malleyed. Two 3s and a drive down the lane gave I-W a 29-22 lead. EPJ didn’t get much closer until the 4th quarter, when they came out aggressive on offense. Lily Kempf hit back-to-back 3s, Donnelly drew a charge – gutsy on what could have been her 5th foul – and EPJ cut the lead to 5 with 2 minutes left in the game. The Huskies had to foul and the only Eagle to touch the ball was Nora O’Malley. She was near perfect from the line in the home stretch.
