The girls basketball team was not deterred by a hot 2nd quarter from the Vermillion Tanagers, as they came back for a 46-42 win in the opening round of Region 4A play Feb. 23 in Vermillion.

EPJ actually had an 11-point lead early in the 2nd quarter, but the Tanagers went on a 20-point tear to hold a 24-13 lead at halftime. The Huskies outscored them 16-5 in the third to tie it up at 29, using a stifling EPJ defense that frustrated Vermillion, especially as the Tanager shooters were going cold.

Both teams had 15 total fouls but the Huskies dominated from the charity stripe – EPJ made 15 of 24 free throws, and Vermillion only 5 of 7. Many of the Husky free throws came in the 4th quarter, as EPJ got a number of steals that the Tanagers fouled on out of frustration.

Eighth grader Courtney Brewer had her best varsity performance so far, as she had 2 key steals in the final minutes and shot 4-4 from the line in that same stretch.

Maddie Hammitt had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also had 5 steals and 4 deflections. Nora Kasting had 3 assists and a block.
