Helped by 2 1st place finishes from Drake Peed and a 2nd from Tyler Goehring in the triple jump, the EPJ boys track and field team scored 35 points for 6th place at the State Class A meet May 28-29 in Spearfish.

Goehring placed 6th in the 300 hurdles and 9th in the long jump. Riley Schmitz took 5th in the triple jump, Jacob Lichtenburg 9th in the discus and Luke McInerney 10th in shot.

For the girls, Grace Peed was 5th in the shot; Alyssa Chytka was 8th in the 200 and 10th in the 100. The 4x100 team of Linley Schmitz, Lauren McDermott, Kaitlyn VanRoekel and Chytka was 8th.

“Really proud of all the kids and really happy with how the season went,” head coach Jake Terry said. “Unbelievable to be able to bring 31 kids to the state track meet. It’s a testament to their hard work and dedication to getting better. Top to bottom every kid improved throughout the season. At the state meet, many individuals and relays performed awesome, finishing better than their incoming seeds. Many PRs as well as school records.”

“Highlights from state – Grace Peed threw her personal best by over 12 feet to place 5th,” said girls coach Jeff Zeller. “The 4x100 relay set a school record (Cera Schmitz, Lauren McDermott, Kaitlyn VanRoekel and Alyssa Chytka). Chytka ran a personal best time in the 200 M Dash by .4 seconds to place 8th.”

“Big thanks to the seniors for their dedication to the program over the years,” Terry said. “Also want to thank the parents for their support throughout the season. This season is definitely one that won’t soon be forgotten.”
