Dakota Valley won their first game at the State A basketball tournment and advanced to the semi-finals, defeating Winner 65-58. The game was similar to the girls tournament where big leads vanished and it became survival.

Winner stretched out a 7 point lead when DV scored 9 straight points to take a 16-14 lead.

The second quarter was Isaac Bruns’ time with help from brother Paul. Isaac made six baskets as the Panthers rolled to a 23-0 run. The Warriors finally scored at the 1:25 mark and had a total of 4 points in the second quarter to DV’s 10.

The Panthers led at half 36-18. DV got scoring from both Paul and Isaac plus Joey Bryan.

The offense of Winner woke up, led by DWU commit Brady Fritz, who did an 11-0 run himself with two 3’s, a lay-up and another 3. Another play set up for Fritz was foiled by a Paul Bruns block.

Going into the fourth quarter, DV led by 10.

While DV kept scoring behind the Bruns and Alex Zephier, the Warriors did likewise closing the score to a possession. Randy Rosenquist got the steal and DV got the final points with free throws by Isaac Bruns and a quirky basket by Paul Bruns. He was fouled and went to the line with only Winner players next to the lane. He missed the free throw but got his own rebound and scored.

DV led in both fast-break and second-chance points.

All but three Winner players were on the 11B football championship team last fall, with Fritz as quarterback.
