The South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors has approved the softball steering committee’s plan to sanction softball.

The sport will begin in the spring of 2023. The first games can be played March 31, 2023. The state tournament would end June 3.

Twenty-five schools said they would participate and 34 said, maybe. Of the 25 schools, 16 voted for spring, 2 summer and 7 fall. Of the maybes, 26 voted spring, 4 summer and 4 fall.

The push for fall came from 9 AA schools while 6 AA schools voted for spring.

Currently, spring sports for Dakota Valley are track and field and girls golf. The other spring sport is tennis, which Dakota Valley does not offer.

Dakota Valley voted for spring as the fall sports schedule is full with cross country, dance, cheer, soccer and volleyball.

With the sanction, softball will be part of Dakota Valley’s schedule.
