Slow first and fourth quarters were the Panthers’ downfall against the Florence/Henry Flyers Thursday, Feb. 11. The Flyers flew into Panther territory as a pick-up game to help fill their schedule. Florence/Henry is a Class A team in Region 2 with a 13-2 record before facing the Panthers.
The Flyers took no time in spreading their wings and sending the basketball flying through the hoop, as they held the Panthers on the ground to only 9 points in the first quarter while putting 17 points of their own on the board. The Panthers fought back in the second quarter, only 13 points behind the Flyers to end the half. In the third quarter, the Panthers clipped the Flyers’ wings keeping them to only 6 points, but not enough to take the lead into the fourth quarter – 49-48. The Flyers came back and held the Panthers to 9 points, once again, to win the game 62-57.
Three Panthers scored in double digits Thursday night – Rylee Rosenquist leading with 13, followed by Jorja VanDenHul at 12 and Rachel Rosenquist at 11. Brooke Carlson pulled down 8 rebounds, followed by Rachel and Rylee with 7 each. Rylee fouled out of the game and VanDenHul was in trouble with 4 personal fouls. Despite this, DV only had 10 turnovers on the night.
“Florence/Henry is a good team,” head coach Tammy Lilly said. “They played aggressive defense and we got off to a slow start in the first quarter and got into some early foul trouble. We battled back and had a great third quarter, just didn’t have enough in the fourth to get it done. Jorja VanDenHul hit two big 3’s in the second half at big moments in the game. Rachel Rosenquist, Rylee Rosenquist and Jorja VanDenHul each ended in double figures on offense.”
