The senior-dominated Dakota Valley boys met expectations with a fourth-place finish at the Class A state track meet May 28 and 29 in Spearfish.

Tommy Nikkel and Gunnar Gunderson did the heavy lifting on Friday, running in both prelims and finals in two of their events – 100m dash and the 110m hurdles, respectively.

Gunderson got the first points for DV, qualifying for the finals and then finishing 4th for 5 points. Likewise, Nikkel qualified for the finals and sped the 100 meters in 10.88 for the gold medal and 10 points. The school record is tied at 10.8 by Taylor White (2011) and Austin Lewis (2013). Nikkel could join them in tied for first or hold the third-place school record.

Just after the 110m finals and before the 100 final, the two joined with Drew Steele and Hunter Beving in the 4x200 that had a 3 heat final. The foursome sprinted 1:31.25 for 3rd place and 6 points.

Dakota Valley’s 4 points in field events also came Friday. Aidan Moran finished 7th in the discus for 2 points.

The lone non-senior to score points Friday was freshman Trae Piel, who finished 7th in the high jump at 5’11”. He tied two others at 5’11”, but they had fewer misses.

With the effort, DV finished Friday night with 26 of their eventual 50 points.

The second day started with a surprise when Nikkel, who led most of the 400m dash, slowed down at the end to finish 3rd at 51.23 and 6 points. The top 2 runners broke 50 seconds.
